Icarus poem6/28/2023 An integrated, well-written comparative essay has comparisons throughout. If you don’t compare when you can, then your paper will read like a few papers, rather than just one integrated paper. Just think about how often we compare two items, two events, the past and present, and more. It’s critical / creative thinking because we have to compare relative values. Except for direct quotes, the paper should sound like you. Also be sure not to copy stuff unless it’s a direct quote. It’s not enough to put things side by side. You have to make the comparisons where possible. To have the depth of exploration, it will be necessary to discuss the Icarus material separately. Tie all the strands/themes and end on a high note! mention Berlin wall here or elsewhere….ĥ. compare with other two: painting and Lego cartoon.ģa. You can give a brief overview of the Icarus story in your own words and even mention that Ovid is the original source.Ģa. You can also mention the typical interpretation through the ages, but also mention that we don’t necessarily follow that view as Be sure that you mention in the thesis all the stuff you are comparing. Perhaps this can be followed by comments on myth and ancient world. Starter thesis: Whether the Icarus story is depicted in words or images, it is about a boy who flies too close to the sun and suffers for it the traditional interpretation often blames the boy for not listening to his elders, but a modern sensibility also takes into account that he was overcome by the desire for joy and freedom. The story, by the way, goes back to the ancient Greeks but it was kept alive because of the Roman poet Ovid (contemporary of Augustus, nephew of Julius Ceasar, who exiled Ovid)… Add at least one quote, which would be from either the poem or the video. The first one was the poem I wrote during the poetry workshop, while the second poem is a found poem that is based on “Previous Condition” by James Baldwin. You are writing a comparative paper that focuses on the famous myth of Icarus and Dedalus in four iterations: Landscape with the Fall of Icarus (Poem) by William Carlos Williams Landscape with the Fall of Icarus (painting) by Pieter Bruegel Icarus Lego cartoon on Youtube (info at bottom) and the Berlin Wall (I just added this, see bottom). I’m also going to include two of my poems here. Perhaps the only connection between the poem and the rest of the collection is that the poem references Greek mythology and the collection as a all is supposed to be inspired by Greek epics like the Iliad or the Odyssey. It was an interesting poem to include in the collection, seemingly because the piece seems to be somewhat out of place. The poem itself seems to be quite dark, with no real interaction between Daedalus with the other characters, with Daedalus more focused on looking out at sea than listening to the requests of children. The poem almost seems to mock Daedalus, whose only real hope in the past of saving is son was if he invented something that allowed him to be fish. In the scene, there are children, many of whom seem envious of the wings, but one boy in particular mentions how they don’t wants wings. Saeed Jone’s poem seems to reference Daedalus finally reaching land after his long journey and looking back into the sea, where his son is now lost in. However, Icarus’ hubris gets the better of him as he flies too close to the sun and crashes due to the wax on his wings melting. The original myth is one that warns of hubris, as Daedalus constructs wax wings for his son and himself to escape Crete. The poem is quite short, being only two stanzas long, and reference the Greek myth of Daedalus, the great but cursed inventor, and his son, Icarus. Some of that might have to do with the fact that I felt like I understood the meaning behind this poem almost instantly, while for some other poems in the collection, comprehension did not appear until after a couple of extra reads. While there were several poems from Saeed Jones book, Prelude to Bruise, that caught my attention, the poem, Daedalus, After Icarus, was probably the first.
